Definitely the terrier group.
Jack Russell Terriers and Rat Terriers(which were known as feists in England). Unfortunately, some of the characteristics that make them great ratters make them trying family companions. But if you like a dog that's SUPER alert, High energy, Loves to dig, run and chase things. Then go for it! Just don't trip in all the little holes he's dug up in your yard looking for rats.

jack russels are good for this. So are dachshunds, but less so now.

Jack russels will require a lot of time on basic obedience skills.. Any terrier will perform the task well, but require a lot of time and patience with obedience!

Personally, I love Cairn Terriers, they're very determined little things, but not as wired as Jack Russels. A Westie or Scottie are in the same general category, just with small differences and coat colors.

Yorkshire Terrier. It is in their blood! Back in the old days,, not the real old days but before I was born and some people sitll do,,they would actually raise Yorkies just for that purpose. They are small but good! I have 2 yorkies and my sis has 2. We didn't even come close to training them and they caught 2 mice in our yard a few summers! Now I don't know about gophers but they are good for rats.

Did you know originally the poodle was a hunting dog? Just a weird trivia bit...

Actually, depending on where you live and time allotments - the Jack Russel is a mini killing machine. Beagles are more of a scent hound, meant to chase, not kill.

Many of the small terriers will fit the bill. Check out a Jack Russell Terrier (the AKC calls them Parson Russell Terrier).

The Jack russell we had on the farm would spend 12 hours a day hunting rats, & cleaned us outta groundhogs around the barns & sheds.

Jack Russell Terrier is a type of small terrier that has its origins in fox hunting and rat catching. - they also bring home birds, squirrels, rabbits, mice - they don't think twice about going into 'fox holes' for their prey.

I don't know if this is the "best" but my father in law had a Jack Russell that kept his backyard torn up catching rats and moles.

standard dachshunds. If you hunt gophers, woodchucks etc., make sure your always with your dog and you have a shovel to help him get out.
