A solar eclipse is when the Shadow of the moon passes directly over a portion of the earth. During an eclipse the visible light of the suns central body is blocked out. However the radiotion emitted by the sun is not totally deflected, and the suns corona (atmosphere) also puts out massive amounts of light and energy. Which is why you aren't supposed to look at the sun directly during an eclipse

The moon comes in between the sun and earth, blocking the sunlight. This temporarily creates a moment of darkness a specific part on earth.
