I've read about how in Japan there are people, mostly young men who shut themselves off from the world known as Hikikomori and I was wondering if anyone knows if this is common in America as well. Such as staying at home all day or almost all day, having few or no friends outside of immediate family, not driving or being afraid to drive, etc. Although I still go to the store occasionaly with my mom, I very seldom ever leave my neighborhood except to go out to eat with my parents on weekends and I only talk to maybe one or two people outside of close faimly on a regular basis.

I guess you haven't had a lot of opportunity to hang out with your peers. You probably have trouble relating to people on a day to day basis. Have you considered going back to school? You seem to have a great IQ. What about a job doing something you love? You sound like you'd be a great teacher. You just get anxious due to a lack of experience. Try having conversation with someone regularly. Is there anyone out there that gets you? It's not uncommon to have trouble with social graces when your mind is otherwise occupied. Seek out people who are also gifted.

Wow...I never thought there will be someone similar to me in another part of the world. I live in South America, in a country called Venezuela. And the description you gave about yourself is the description of me. Yes, we have to make a little effort to make new friends. Internet could be a start. Try doing different activities ex: Yoga or a course that interests you. Good Luck and if you want to write me (Argentox2@yahoo.com)

Much like myself, except not for social anxiety reasons. I doubt Hikikomori shut away the world for this reason.
In the world but not of it, that's a good way to define my condition.

Well, to know if it´s social anxiety you need to specify if you get anxious when you are with people, when you go out or are exposed to social situations. The key here is the level of anxiety the persons suffers when he or she are faced with social interactions of any kind. So if you feel anxiety and because of it you decide not to go out or have friends then maybe yes, you could have social anxiety, but if you feel comfortable during social interactions then maybe we should start looking at something else.

Are you depressed? Do you have agoraphobia, afraid to leave your house? I would ask a psychologist for a workup and advise.
