I would certainly rather see non-citizens having to take and pass OUR driving tests before they take to the roads. Anyone driving in the U.S. should have a valid U.S. license, in my opinion, even if it's only issued for a specific amount of time, such as the period of a visa.

Drivers' licenses are simply that-- cards stating that the bearer is qualified and licensed to operate a vehicle. They have nothing to do with one's citizenship.

Foreign students studying at American universities drive to class; immigrants studying for their citizenship drive to work. I don't think that anyone is proposing that they be allowed to drive unlicensed.

We have come to use state-issued drivers' licenses as a means of national identification, despite the fact trhat the states issuing them often have no way of knowing who is a citizen or not (when I was sixteen I didn't have a US passport-- they took my word that I was born in the US and didn't move here as an infant). If the underlying question is, "Should there be some sort of national ID card demonstrating citizenship?", then it should be recognized as being a fundamentally different question.

I have a problem with giving our only common form of recognized ID to people who are not citizens of this county. I would not have a problem with it if we had a national ID system that the federal government ran. This issue is not just about foreigners being able to drive it is about them using an ID to get things that they should not be able to have.

I don't think there is a law that non-citizens can drive without a driver's license. So they need a driver's license to drive I guess. They need to drive like any other human who needs it.
