I guess it's supposed to be a way of 'expressing yourself'. As to why people don't do so in less damaging and not permanent ways, I have no idea.

"...marks on your body..."

Its not YOUR body, its MINE, so don't over work yourself about it. Being given the right and ability to use it essentially as I please, it has become my choice to decorate it with tattoos and piercings. I find it to be an easier way to express my personality and feelings in a tattoo rather than in words, song or poems or whatever. Every tattoo of mine has a story and each one to come will have a story as well. I love how they feel, how they look.

I enjoy getting one just as much as some people enjoy Sunday football (which is something I don't understand). Because its something you probably wouldn't do, its understandable for you to not understand it. I was raised and told that I should do the things that make me happy and worry about consequence when I'm dead. I only live once and I take advantage of that by doing all the things that make me happy and that make me feel more like ME. I love my body, but I love it more as art.

I am offended that you call them "marks." Tattoos are art. They are beautiful. They are expressive. They symbolize who you are, and who you were, and where you have been, and where you want to be, and so many other things that i cannot possibly list them all here. They are the most personal form of self expression there is. I have several, each symbolizing something I went through, or who I was at a certain time. And though I may not be that person anymore, i want to remember who I was, and I don't regret any of my tattoos. They remind me of places I have been, and places I don't ever want to go again. How can can refer to them as just "marks on your body" baffles me!! They are sooo much more than that!! Open your mind!!

i am very pierced and have been wanting to get tattoed for a long time - i just cannot find anything beautiful enough to add to my body!
all of my piercings mark parts in my life and i want my tattoos to represent things that have changed my life!
i love tattoos and the entire culture, you can sometimes tell what people have been through my looking at their tattoos!

you only live once, why not have something beautiful on your body, something you can look at everyday and be happy about!?
ok so it is going to be there for the rest of your life, but that is why the choice has to be laboured over!

we all have marks on our bodies - some people just choose to have pretty ones:)

Some people see it as art. Putting something on their body that they think is beautiful and worth remembering. It's beautiful body art. Maybe you should get a tattoo to try and see what I'm saying.

Always thought the same until Steve Irwin died.
My eighteen year old son had been lusting after a "surf" type of tattoo since he was sixteen and been talked out of it Next thing I know he gets home with a tattoo of the southern cross on his shoulder.......the wave of patriotism that Steve's death stirred in Australia hit him as well.. VERY unexpected, but I had no argument ! How can you argue with that?

ill tell you how it is from my point of view
i got my first tattoo at the start of the yr i now have 3
the reason i got my first tatt is because i love art and i wanted to express myself with ink on my skin. as for the other 2 within a year they are addictive im guessing its something to do with the addrenaline that happens.
theres no need to make a big fuss over people with tattoos they are human too except they look different and to who ever said they were disgusting please inform me of how they are disgusting.

what is the appeal of the shirt you are wearing? We do it because we like it. We do it because to us it is a piece of art. We do it because we want to remember someone special. We do it because we can. Why does it matter to you? Its not your life or your body. Get over it. Life goes on!

Hmmmm....why do I get tattooed? Well to me it is art, not just coloring on skin. The art of taking something from paper and making it translate to skin is AMAZING. I love my tatts...every single one of them. I now have more than I can count.
If they don't appeal to you thats fine, tattooing probaby isn't for you.

It represent yourself i suppose.. thats y people dont just go and "ahh i'll make tattoo today". it took me months before i decided to make my 1st tattoo (last week). and im OBSESSED about it now! i love everything about it.

and btw, its not just 'marks' its an art/symbol of urself. thats y its best to have a customise tattoo, not just copying someone else's.
give it a try :)
