This is what microsoft like to call a "feature". I've turned mine off, cuz it annoys me. I'm going on the assumption that you have "fast user switching" and several user names are displayed when you bring the PC out of standby?

Try here: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_oe.htm#xp_unread_mail

This is a method to remove the "Unread mail" notification on the fast user switching screen, and that way you don't have to log off all your programs or shut down completely. No one will know :)

If you are using a shared user account (you all use the same login name for the PC), then you will have to log off messenger properly to stop anyone seeing the notification.

It seems like you you have not fully exited from your Windows Messenger. To fully close down your messenger, click on the green man icon on the toolbars and select exit. However, better still, create different logins (or just one other ) for those that use the PC. Only giving yourself admin rights. That will give you more privacy.

Just get yourself a different site on the same computer than everyone else, and set it so that you need to sign in with a secret password. Then everyone else can still use the computer but will not see your messages.

why not just shut down your pc then? that way when the pc is switched on it won't go back to how it was when it went into stand-by. that is after all the point of stand-by.
