would it make better sense to rent a bridal gown instead of buying one?

I rented my prom dress. I was able to rent way nicer dress than I payed for the price of rental. It might be a good idea if you are considering a designer name.
BUT, if you search around you can find numerous ways to buy a wedding gown rather inexpensively.

I would say it may sound like a good idea to save some money on the cost of a gown, but the Bridal gown is something very special. You may want to show it off to your children one day. Also, if you rent it, it puts you in a different frame of mentality. It is not your gown. If something happens to it, you will need to pay for the repairs, at possibly a much higher cost than it would cost to repair anything that happened to a dress you bought. I would say talk to a rental shop owner and at least see if you fall in love with your rental gown, could you buy it out after the fact.

Another thought, and I am not sure on this. Can they make alterations to rental gowns to make it fit your body perfectly? Or, would you be stuck to only certain limited dresses that may fit you.

Would you have to rent shoes as well?

CAN you rent a gown? Outside of Vegas I've never seen a rental place for gowns. I will say that my gown has been hanging in my closet for 13 years. I never take it out and no one I know ever wanted to wear it. I say rent if you can.

that would depend on what sort of gown you wanted- what price they are to rent & what price you could get a new outfit for.
you could possibly look at buying an outfit that will look GREAT as a wedding gown once teamed with the appropriate accessories but can be worn again as an evening/after 5 gown
in fact I have just read a magazine article about people doing just that

It isn't necessarly whether it makes better sense to rent a wedding dress than to buy one...it is more a matter of what do you want to be the most important part of your wedding. If a flashy wedding dress is most important...then buy one. But, if your importance lies more in having a big, flashy reception, with lots of good food, perhaps live music, dancing and a very special time to spend with family and friends...then rent your dress and spend your money on the fancy reception. Or, if your honeymoon is your major importance...again, rent the dress.
You need to decide where you want to place your special emphasis...and then obtain the dress accordingly.

Good Luck!!!!
P.S. By the way, I rent wedding gowns. I have 6 to choose from if you're interested.E mail me. My info. is on file.

That would be up to you, Depends on how big your wedding will be perhaps and rather or not you wish to make/spend big money that you want miss. Renting a dress is OK and having one made or purchasing a dress is OK as well, It all depends on you, I was going to purchase my dress but at the time it cost way to much so I waited on a better deal, Then thought about it had a very small ceremony and decided to rent it, Because to me one time occasion and we just took pictures. Congrats and do you that's all that counts,NO one has to know what you decide to do.

I understand in some countries it is common to rent a gown just like renting a tuxedo.

If you can find a place to rent a decent one, Go for it! Wish that option had been open to me, and I know a lot of women feel that way. Funny how there really isn't sentimentality in the "gown" itself - it's just hanging in the closet....

Because brides don't hand down their gowns to their daughters anymore renting makes a lot more sense.

If it's a huge wedding and your kinda cutting corners than yes. A small wedding buy an evening gown. It's what I did and I only paid 100.00 for it. Good luck
