well there are several benefits from eating healthy. Sugar causes your pancreas to secret insulin which causes you to have a brief sugar rush and then a crash. Its much better to get the sugar your body needs from other sources such as fruits. It is generally thought that maintaining a healthy weight and reasonable diet will lead to a healthier more energetic life and help avoid or minimize the chances of contracting diabetes and high blood pressure.

My parents always said all things in moderation and I believe that's generally great advice. A cookie now and then isn't going to kill you and you'll probably enjoy it more. Just avoid regular consumption of refined sugar, processed flour, fried food and don't go overboard with the trans fats and you'll feel as good as diet can make you feel. Exercise is the next step. Good luck.

I can tell you this. When I was 26 I gave up sugar completely. I read every label, and only ate tiny amounts of honey on occasion. I honestly read all labels and was so careful what I put in my mouth. You also have to cut out refined carbos like white bread, flour, rice, noodles. Now dont give them up just switch to wheat. Many of the stores now carry wheat in each of these. The reason you have to do that is that refined (white) carbos turn to sugar in your bloodstream and raise havoc on you hormones and insulin.

Make these two changes and I guarantee you will lose weight, have energy, have a better chance of not getting diabetes, and will look better. The benefits are endless. But all around better health is the best reason.

I lost 60 lbs at the time, felt terrific, and not once craved sugar after the first few weeks. Then everytime I wanted sweat treats I switched to health food ones that had minor honey. It did not spike my insulin like white sugar. I used to eat those little honey ice cream sandwiches once in awhile, what a treat.

Work slowly towards your goal, dont try cold turkey (or you will suffer big cravings). Just start elliminating it in snacks, then at breakfast, then lunch, then dinner. Do this over 2-3 weeks. Then your body wont miss it.
On to better health.

Sugar is addictive. You should try to wean yourself - try slowly cutting back on the amount you use until you get to 1 tsp. As others have mentioned, some healthier alternatives would be Agave syrup or Honey. They are technically still sugar, but your body absorbs them differently than refined sugar. If you can tolerate artifical sweeteners, there are plenty out there to try -Splenda, Equal, Sweet N Low, etc. Truvia is a natural sweetener with no calories. Eating that much sugar is detrimental to your health in so many ways!

From my own personaly experience, you do feel more energetic when you leave out all the bad sugars. However, your brain feeds on sugar, and I have found when I eliminate too much sugar from my diet, I just can't seem to think clearly and I make a lot of silly mistakes here and there. It depends on your family history and body metabolism whether or not you will get type 2.

Too much sugar is not the problem. The problem is eating too much food -- all types of food -- especially foods high in calories. Too much sugar does not "give" you diabetes. Eating sugar does not cause diabetes. Eating or drinking too many calories can make you overweight, and overweight is a leading risk factor for type 2 diabetes.

'Bad Sugar' is the worst thing to eat. It has no nutritional value, and causes degenerative diseases like: asthma, arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, hypoglycemia, IBS, obesity, osteoporosis, and tooth decay.
So, I would say stick to healthy carbohydrates for your sweet tooth needs...maybe try some raw food desserts because those are *usually* made with whole foods.
