.Net is not a requirement to run Windows XP, but certain applications will require that it is installed - these applications will tell you if it is required and will most likely not let you install the app until you re-install .net.
The worst challenge you face is the likelihood of an application currently on your system that does require .net and as a result may cause random errors when you try to use the app.
If you're keen on Windows Update, AV update and other application updates, then system restore might not be your best option. Simply go to the MS website, download it and re-run the installation.
Next, next, next...and you're done.

Yes i think so. Reverse this change by doing a System Restore. If you don't have a system restore point... umm sorry buddy.

It depends on what you do with your machine.

My advice would be to re-install (from Micro$oft website). It can affect everything from driver function to auto-updating.

i would advise doing a system restore to or before the date you installed it so other than that I don't know what to tell you, but GOOD LUCK!

I have to have it as part of my graphics card requirements - no idea why but that's what ATI informed me.

No.
But if you want to reinstall it, just download it from Microsoft. Its simple, just click on 'next', 'next', 'next'...
