LOL, I do it too! I don`t use the word "like", Which most kids use like(smile) in almost every sentence, especially when asked a question. Drives me batty! but I always drive myself "batty" with saying uuh when I talk, and most of us use uuh, or uum in our conversations, Does anyone know why? just try it with a friend or Family member, and listen for the `uuh, or uum` word to come right up in almost every sentence. And the kids will usuall say: Like when we were playing.......

I believe it's just an idiosyncrasy of speech that certain people develop. I'm of the firm belief that, more often than not, students are not being properly educated in speech and grammar. Even if they are being instructed well, their parents might not reinforce good speech and grammar at home. Whatever the reasons, it is VERY ANNOYING, especially when the person is speaking extemporaneously, or publicly, and should know better!! I have actually heard educators addressing an assembly of students, who couldn't get through a complete sentence, without "um", "uh", "like", etc.

Perhaps it's a verbal equivalent of a comma. But I think ,more likely the person wants to keep talking , but they need a minute to find what they want to say next. If they are quite while they find the next word they run the risk of being interrupted, as their silence may be taken for having finished speaking: so they use a "filler" word, or sound.

Well, like is just annoying, but the uuh and umm is just a pause letting them think for a second....... I wondered about this a long while back and that is what I came up with........ I noticed it a lot with some French exchange students (this was about 18 yrs ago), and I asked them -

Many people use "umm" because they're trying to organize their thoughts into a cohesive sentence, or they're nervous and don't know what to say. The too-frequent use of the word "like" however is often an indication of poor grammar.

saying uhh, or umm is what people do while they are processing what they are going to say. It's a habit people get into. People should just get into the habit of staying silent when their contemplating what they are going to say. It makes for a much more competent presentation.
As far as saying "like" all the time, it's just a bad habit

Not everyone. People do that because that's their style (annoying style) of talking. If LOL you do too, you would know why! Catch some info on people who do do that (I could to you!)
Hope the answer helped!
I like like uuh!

"Like" is a somewhat new slang word. Many people use it and not know that they are mumbling that in their sentences. Ummm, people are usually thinking or not concentrating enough on what they are talking about. It is basically a stalling word until they think of what they want to say.

It is used when people are trying to think of things to say and acts as a filler. Its as if you are getting ahead of yourself on what you are going to say and need some time to think it out. Instead of being silent, you naturally say "Um" or "Like".

they are typically people that are not very comfortable speaking or have an extensive vocabulary, so they use "like" and "uhh" and "umm" to pause and search for a word or the next thing to say.
