When do kids know how to tie their shoes???

We keep showing our son and he can do it when we show him but if his shoe comes lose at school he dosent remember.

It's a lot to remember for a child. Some kids just get it sooner than others. It's also really hard to explain, as I'm sure you know. My daughter mastered it sooner than my son, but now his laces seem to stay better than hers. Just be patient with him. I once had a friend who was taking a work related class so he could qualify for a position in his company writing instruction manuals. For his final exam, he had to write directions for tying shoe laces. Just try to wrap your brain around that the next time you find yourself growing frustrated with him. It's a lot more complicated that we remember because we can do it without any thought at all. I actually tried to write the instructions and there was no way I could do it! After that, I was a lot more patient with my kids while they were learning. Good luck to you and your son!

I used to play a game with kids in first grade. They loved it. I would have the whole class take off their shoes and throw them into the center of the circle. When I tell them to start, they retrieve their shoes (which were all shoelaces then) and see which team could finish first by putting shoes back on and laced and tied. Why did I do this ? Because taking care of 25 first graders, they always wantedme to tie their shoe laces. They didn't know it but after they came in last a few times (other kids didn't notice), they learned to tie their shoes quickly. Try it with your own child. Tell them you will go get an ice cream as soon as she puts on her shoes and has them tied, or you will have to go without her. Don't let her know why you are doing it and don't help her and don't leave her alone unattended. You can even go out to the car and clean it out while you wait and she thinks you are leaving. This is done to show you how fast they can tie it if they want to and are capable. IF they are not capable, you can't do this to them. between 5-7 is appropriate. This scenario works. My son, who is now 29, when he was 3 was in preschool and his teacher said he wasn't learning his colors. I knew he knew them. so on the way home, I bought a much treasure pkg. o M&M's and for each color crayon of the 8 basic colors he got right, he got an M&M and if he knew all 8 he got the whole bag. I learned when I was about 5 years old. There's this one way you can teach a kid that has to do with a bunny going around the tree, through a hole(or something, can't remember that part) and out the other side and it makes the bunny ears(the tied shoe laces). You could probably make up whatever little story you want to get your kid to learn how to tie his shoes but it would also be fun for him to learn and he'll have a better chance of remembering how to do it if there's a special way.

I agree with Karla above. When my ds finished 2nd grade, I decided he couldn't go another year without knowing how to tie his shoes. I figured we had the whole summer to teach him so the first day of summer break we sat down to begin the daunting task of shoe-tying. Well, after a few tries that first day and a few the next, he could do it pretty good with just a little assistance from me and after about a week he could do it without any help whatsoever! I couldn't believe I had put it off so long thinking it would take all summer. I guess the point is that if you just keep doing what you're doing --going over it a few times each day--, you'll be surprised at how quickly he'll pick it up. Don't give up!

If hes not ready to learn just yet - and some kids are not at that age - get the kind of shoes that have the velcro fastening so he can simply press it down. Give him lots of praise for doing up his own shoes even though it is relatively simple for a child to grasp, then move on the laces afterwards. When learning to tie them do a simple, one two, three as you tie them for him and he will soon start to copy.

It usually takes quite awhile before they get the hang of this. It takes fine motor skills to tie shoes and some kids need extra time to develope them. Most kids learn at age 5 while some don't get the hang of it until age 7. Try getting a puzzle with pieces that have laces and have him practice.

That happens to kids they know how to do it but at times they forget, you just need to make tieing his shoes out of a song or poem so that he'll remember when he's a school. I hope it all goes well.

It is different for every kid.

My daughter was four and a half. My son was around six, and then he only did it because I told him he wouldn't be able to play soccer if he couldn't tie his shoes.....saying what happens if your shoes come untied during the game..... He still won't tie his shoes unless he is told to do it. I thought he forgot too, but my husband thinks it is more likely that he is just being lazy. :-)

Well i learned when i was about 5, but there are kids that learn eariler, and then later that!!!

I have seen these real cool puzzles that have a shoe on then and help kids tie their shoes.

mine learnt at 5 but they have a friend who is 7 in December who told me he will get $10 if he learns to tie his shoes. I guess this is a good motivation if it is frustrating you
