My understanding is his job is to tempt mankind by G-d's command, rather than the Christian version which is he is a rebellious angel corrupting mankind to drag them down with him.

Mark Christians see Satan as an angel that rebelled against G-d along with many other angels and no longer follows G-d's orders. Muslims believe Satan was a Jinn who disobeyed G-d when he refused to bow to Adam when G-d ordered the Jinn to do so.

yes, you are right.
EDIT
we do believe in satan, we DON'T believe in the devil, or that G-d has some kind of archnemesis.

well the concept of "Satan" means a few things in Judaism
their is the yezer Hara which means he evil inclination. That is basically the voice in you that wants you to chose personal gratification (such as sleeping in) verses developing ones self and service to G-d. Such as studding Torah.
Their is also what is the angle of death. It is exactly as it sounds the servant of G-d that takes your soul.
then their is what is called the "Saataon" or the adversary. This is the Representative chariter that whose job it is to so called advocate against the Jewish people. Very much associeated with the evil inclination.
all these things are very improtand and are not seen as evil, because if they did not exist then life would not be difficult we would be as robots, and then would would be the point of reward and punishment? The only reason why they exist is so we may over come them and deserve our potion in the world to come.

You've pretty much got it down. Consider Satan 'the loyal opposition'. He's still on G-d's payroll, and his work, by tempting us, is in actuality the good work, because only by being tempted can we choose to actively be good. It's like your muscles -- if you use them, they strengthen, if you don't ever put them against resistance, they atrophy.
No one can set themselves apart from G-d, and the Christian view of Satan is dangerously close to polytheism -- how can G-d have an enemy?

it rather is thrilling. i've got by no potential heard of devil no longer being a fallen angel, yet our Bible needless to say shows that he comes and is going earlier God at cases. actual, our Bible does no longer coach that devil is on the instant in Hell surrounded by potential of hearth and brimstone. that's Hollywood! devil and his followers would be thrown into the lake of hearth, so what sense might it make if he enjoys residing in hearth? i do no longer think of the Jewish devil is portrayed as evil sufficient. He merely appears like a guy with an unlucky job.
