It's the same thing that makes some people talk in their sleep. That's all they are doing. My dog does the same thing, except her 'growls' are like mini squeeky barks. And with her being a Siberian Husky, it's rather funny. She also dreams a lot-- sometimes she's twitching and moving so much it's like she's having a seizure.

He's dreaming! Our dog does it all the time! He growls and whimpers, it's hillarious! I think he is dreaming of chasing a cat or playing with the kids!

a dream sometimes when dogs are asleep they may have a dream that will make them growl either that or he or she hears someting outside dogs have really good hearing.

It's dreaming. The same way you cry or wimper in your sleep or wake up scared.

Dogs do dream. My Pug Sandy kicks her legs and sometimes makes weird noises. The thing I hate most is when she is sleeping, she don't have her eyes closed. Her eyes move around and it looks nasty. I wake her up sometimes to make sure she is ok because she acts like she has seizures or something.
