Some of the answers say what I was planning to say and I would just repeat them. That being said, I will just tell you that you are undobtedly the most stupid person that I have run on to on this site in the past 10 MINUTES. Put that in your pipe and smoke it you frigging left wing radical communislamic fascist pig. Yes, that's right, go ahead and have my question removed. The jury has already seen it, so the insult has been seen by some.

The Iranians can easily control the Strait of Hormuz (one side of which is Iranian!), and the Strait is the only route into or out of the Persian Gulf. If the Iranians were to launch a surprise attack at US Naval vessels transiting the Strait, they could possibly seriously damage or sink one or more ships. US Navy ships that happened to be in the Gulf at the time would be at somewhat greater risk (although well defended, on high alert, and probably in the process of destroying all of Iran's naval assets), but only because the Strait would be impassable until control was taken of both sides of the Strait by US forces.

However, the cost to Iran for having made such a surprise attack on the US Navy would be so high that it's hardly worth worrying about. No such attack was made even when the Iranians were taking over the US Embassy in Teheran-- it would lead to Iran's military decimation.

In any case, other than the ship or ships that happened to be involved in the initial attack, the US Navy would not be much damaged. We have ships in the Gulf, but also in the Atlantic and Pacific, homeported both around the US and in such overseas ports as Yokusuka and the Indian Ocean, submarines constantly at sea around the globe... the US Navy is not going to get wiped out by the Iranians, under any circumstances.

IF we were to attack Iran, we could most likely lose NO ships, and a few airmen/aircraft.

Please look in your History book for Operation Praying Mantis... they got "froggy" ONCE, and we damn near decimated their Navy... with no loses on our side.

NOW they have a dozen or so new CHINESE missile boats, and shore-based anti-shipping missiles... and a number of Russian diesel-submarines. IF we were to attack, it would be "A Target Rich Environment" to quote ol' Goose.

What is FAR more likely is IRAN closing the Straits of Hormuz (I've transitted those waters 12 times)... a surprise attack on their part against an aircraft carrier group... followed by mining the straits.

THAT would cost us some ships damaged or sunk... and would cause the United States to react. Iran would lose it's entire military in a matter of weeks.

BY THE WAY... President BUSH is NOT up for election again... and there is NOTHING yet brought forward that could be cause for impeachment.

First, we will not be attacking Iran. Secondly, we would not lose ships and men if we did. Third, President Bush cannot be impeached because there is no reason under the Constitution that he is impeachable. Now, get a life.

Chow!!!

You're not going to get any good replies here including mine.

I suppose the USN would attempt to knock out the Iranian missile batteries on the Gulf before they could shoot at our ships. If Iran has Sunburns then it's likely that at least a few would successfully penetrate the Navy's defenses and mission kill some ships.

Depends on how many of those Russian rocket torpedoes VA-111 Shkval (Squall)
they have, and if they can get close enough to fire them.If they can get into range they could take out an aircraft carrier.
If they can't get into range - no problemo.
So on a scale of 1-10 , I'd guess at a 1.5 -2 out of ten at losing some ships.
Our navy would not be knocked out unless they have nukes from North Korea hanging around.Even then they would have to get their bombers and attack planes through our defenses.
If we attack Iran it will be pretty wild.

The US Navy has NEVER been defeated. They've lost some ships, and they lost Pearl Harbor, but they've NEVER lost a war in 200 years.

The Iranians have a bunch of anti-ship missiles and some rubber boats.

Lastly, Bush isn't up for election. I don't know if they teach this to the rabid Left dems, but there is something called the US Constitution, which term-limits him.

Lets hope it don't come to that... But if it does, I think our Navy will do just fine... Our Boots on the ground might be a litte tired though... The Boys in White, Have had some good down time, Im sure there ready for some action.. How hard is it to shoot off couple of nukes anyway :)

The Navy is planning on dropping in by parachute Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi. The ladies constant nagging will drive the Iranians to the point of surrendering just to shut them up.
