Smoking restrictions are fair in the sense that they prevent non smokers from being exposed to possibly carcinogenic secondary smoke. However, it is the Government that is responsible for not providing sufficient respect for smokers , for instance spaces at airports , buildings etc , considering the amount of money that smokers pay in taxes. While alcohol related health care costs are high as well, one does not see the same "pariah" kind of status meted out to drinkers.

Smoking restrictions are designed to create a healthy environment - that is not to say they do. The theory has created a rash of prejudices against the smoker as if they were evil because the government said so. Anytime a government endorses or creates laws that discriminate they are unfair and should be eliminated. In some states new laws are passing prohibit ting the sale of certain foods because a minority eat them and another minority is offended by that, now one minority has the superiority of state endorsement and will continue to persecute that which they do not understand. This is only the tip of the iceberg and the once majestic country of freedom that was once the USA is perilously close to the teetering edge of another civil war. Then again these people creating laws may not have studied history so they are doomed with us to repeat it.

I agree with all the restrictions on inside smoking , however I think that people should be able to smoke outside except when it comes to standing around doorways , this area needs to be moved on a bit as then when people are entering a building or shopping centre they need to walk through this smoke area.
It is impossible to restrict smoking in cars with children, and smoking in parks and on beaches should only be restricted cos of the butts that are thrown down on the sand etc.
Anyone that is doing something that pushes their choice onto others without their consent need to think about the consequences of what they do. This goes for more then just smoking. Responsible smokers wouldnt mind changes made, the only ones that make the uproar are the ones that don't care about others.
