I am looking for a small, compact camera (similar to the Sony Cybershot but with a closer zoom).

Both the Canon S2 and S3 (IS) have superb macro capabilities. There's a setting called Super Macro that allows you to focus down to 0cm. Or the regular Macro mode goes down to 10cm.
I've had both cameras and while there are improvements in the S3 over the S2 there isn't anything about the S2 that would prevent me from recommending it.

You aren't looking for a closer optical zoom, you need a lens with macro capabilities. That is what will allow you to get closer to your subject and still be in focus.
