“We achieve everything by our efforts alone. Our fate is not decided by an almighty God. We decide our own fate by our actions. You have to gain mastery over yourself. . . . It is not a matter of sitting back and accepting”
- Aung San Suu Kyi -

If you disagree please state why...

Aung San Suu Kyi, in case you don't know, is a Burmese non-violent protester who is trying to turn the militant regime in Myanmar into a democracy. She recently won the Nobel peace prize....

i agree with that.

life is a series of choices, a child born into a rich family can make poor choices and wind up living on the streets just as a child born into a poor family can make all of the right decisions and wind up living in a mansion on the hill.

also, you can't just sit back thinking an oportunity is going to come along, you have to get out there, find what you want, and make it happen. we are all born with the same potential, some people just chose to accept the position they were born into rather than working for something better or different.

another thing.. people give 'god' credit for anything they do in life rather than realizing that they did it by themselves, people don't give themselves enough credit.

nature and time control our begining and our end but we control everything in between.

Personally, nothing we may chose to do is really our choice, but the culmination of all choices made before us. For instance, if Fate had decided that your parents had waited another month, it would not be you reading this right now. Truly, to believe that there are NO higher beings is not only ignorant, but also thick headed. How then, could the universe come into existence, if it were not for the will of something larger than us? As a last thought, I shall leave you with a greater question, how did the gods come to exist? I don't mean our natural desire to BELIEVE in a higher power, but the same way the universe came into existence.

Yes, we have Free Will, but we also have Original Sin that we are all born with, so we can never have complete control over our actions.

God may not decide each of our fates as individuals, but He does decide the fate of humanity as a whole, i.e. our purpose on this planet.

Well Well Well....I'm a big fan of Ghandhi who was the almighty leader of non-violence influence. I agree that we do decide our fates, but the thing is that there are some exceptions, as to what if we get in a car accident and die? That is our fate, and it's left to God. We can't decide when to die or not.

Sorta. I only question the fact that there is something called "fate". I have trouble believing that all things are pure coincidence, especially when I look into the eyes of my children, who I know are supposed to be here. Then again, I don't believe that one is just handed things consistently throughout life and that one must attempt to improve his or her own life. It's a loaded question you've asked here and unfortunately I don't have time to clearly detail my ideas--but they are just that after all--ideas. The truth is that no one really knows why anything happens. All we can do is suppose.

This is not a yes or no answer it is philosophical. Although I disagree with the structure and wording I agree with the theory. G-d does not decide our fate he/she created us as creatures with free will, so yes we determine our fate - however - if one believes in G-d then he/she is a benevolent "father/mother/friend" and as such would be remiss in leaving us to our own resources. When we master ourselves we have a fool for a master.

I disagree but agree to some extent. The almighty God gives us what we need if we put effort into it. He gives us choices. We have all heard that God helps those who help themself. He gives us the tools we need to achieve. The only thing that is decided is is the final outcome of the paths we choose, not what path we choose.

Yes I do agree with this. YOu can beleive in God, or be spiritual in other ways, but you have to create your own fate, the energy you put out in the worl comes back to you in ways you will never be able to imagine.

I do believe all things are our choices, yes. Our lives are completely that of free will, however, I do believe we are written in a book of life. And even tho He does not "control" us, He does omnisciently know what we will do, what we will or won't accomplish~ our destinies do belong to the almighty, in my mind anyway:o]

sorry for the runon sentence!

Of course God made us with the most highly of intelligence above all the other creatures on earth. It is up to us ourselves to do the right thing with what life throws us.
