Open to the west or open up the west.

SInce it was faster to take a train across the continent, that a ship around the Horn, goods and services could traverse with little risk of destruction (as compared to a sea voyage taking months)

The government offered and gave the railroads one square mile of choice for every township they built tracks through. The railroads got enough property to pay for the track.

By puttting tracks down in that direction. Railroad pioneers saw to it that it went to the west coast.

they hired a lot of Irish and chinese,and layed track from both ends, met and drove a golden spike to join together. 1869 in Utah
