The LA County Museum of Art is great, as is the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Getty Center is gorgeous. I haven't checked if it has re-opened or not, but the planetarium in Griffith Park is cool. If you are into sports, visit the Staples Center to watch the Lakers or the Clippers or to see some King's hockey. You can find good shopping everywhere, depending on what you want - from Rodeo Drive and the Promenade in Santa Monica to the funkier areas like Silverlake and Los Feliz. As far as eating, there is a ton! Pick up a restarant guide or a free LA Weekly. Try to hit Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles! Delicious!!

A great place that is seldom mentioned, is the LaBrea Tar Pits, and the Page Museum next door. (These are next to the L.A. Museum of Art, which is great too).
It's cheap, and you get to see them digging bones out of the tar pits, and see tons of prehistoric animals in the museum.
Another good place is the Queen Mary in Long Beach. Good restaurants onboard too. You could spend several hours on the ship, and they even rent the rooms out as hotel rooms (kinda pricy though...)

holloywood blvd has the stars names on it
disneyland is half an hour away
you should also look into city tours, they are usually 1/2 to 1 day and are a really good way to see a city

My family went there a few years ago and it actually was really fun to take the walking tour of LA from the AAA tour book. Even if you don't want to do the walking tour, the AAA book has a great list of things we tried that ended up being really fun.

The Grove for shopping, and if you are sight-seeing on Rodeo drive then there are nice restaurants where you can eat al fresco.
