two reasons most likely:
1) they are not on
2) you are blocked

Blocked, or not online. But actually i've had a few screen names that for no reason would show up on one of my buddy lists, and not others (i have several screen names, and sometimes i could only see my friends on one of them). Unfortunately i don't know why and never really found a way to resolve this.

Sometimes people just stop using aim. MSN is more popular amongst the teeny bopper crowd now I heard.

perhaps you are blocked, or someone has blocked you, if they have blocked you there is no way to change that....except change screen names on AIM, then you can IM them, til they block you again that is....but then, just keep changing screen names.
