What is the best way to hang a very heavy 4' wide x 8' tall x 1/2" inch deep piece of wooden art on a wall so that it is secure?

Challenge... This piece of art is a 20 piece puzzle.

Option 1 - We can secure the completed puzzle to a wood backing of the same size. Hence the question, how to hang heavy art?

Option 2 - To make the weight easier to manage, we can hang each puzzle piece individually. However, the challenge is how to hang each individual piece so that the puzzle fits together?

We're open to both ways, but looking for ideas on how to execute on either.

I'm an associate curator of an art gallery and am used to hanging large pieces. It is true that the material of the wall is critical to hanging heavy work. You must know the thickness and the material. If it is plywood, go for it. If it is particle board, avoid hanging heavy objects. If it is thick enough drywall, It will work, but if it is too thin you will run the risk of your piece falling off the wall. Hanging them seperately is not a bad idea, but may compromise your original vision. Make SURE you use thick wire and large eyehooks, that you will screw into the wood frame. Find heavy strength hangers (available at lowe's or home depot) as well as a thick and wide nail, ANGLED DOWN.
Do not assume that the more hangers you use the safer it will be. In fact for your purposes you may only need two evenly positioned hangers. Have a friend help you, but diregard what the idiot before me said about "get a man in"... You will do just fine as you are!!! good luck and keep making art.

I would suggest looking into a ceiling rail system, they are perfect for hanging large and heavy art. They can hold up to 125 lbs. Take a look at the attached picture.

Take a piece of 1 x 4 or 1x6. Set a saw to a 45 degree cut and cut down the middle. The piece on the wall mount to the studs with the angle goin out to in, facing upward. Then attach the other piece of the 1by to the art out to in facing down. (Making sure both are level when you mount/attach) This will put the weight into the studs and not the wall boards.

If you mount it in one piece it can be done but it may be a bit tricky. Get a stud finder and mark out the studs where you want to hang it. Drill holes and use lag bolts to mount your mounts then mount your piece. Since it's 8' tall I'd use four. 2 at the top and 2 at the bottom.

Hang pictures to securely attached picture hooks rated for the weight of the artwork or object. If in doubt about picture hardware or its installation, ask advice at the hardware store.

what your wall is made of and how thick is just as important .
