my cat was like that when i got the second one. it just took some time for them to get used to each other. however, i saw this episode of mad about you where helen hunt said she had 2 cats that didn't get along and she put like the water oil from a cat of tuna and put them in the bathroom together and closed the door and after a while they were grooming each other and they got along ever since. i dont know if it actually would work cause it was just on a tv show, but it seems like it would, so it would be worth a shot.

Cats that are that much older will be jealous (depending strongly on the older cat's personality) of younger cats. You have only had the kitten a month. No biggie. Until the kitten accepts that it is the underling and your older cat accepts his submission they will argue. They may argue for the rest of the older cat's life but as long as there are no injuries, no one is keeping the other from food water or the litter box they should be fine. Oh make sure you put down and extra set of food and water dishes and an extra litter box. With two cats you should have three boxes. This kills the territory conflict and lets both get what they need.

I think you made the right choice as to sex of the kitten and an older cat is just not going to like a kitten. They have too much energy and will bug the older cat to death. You are doing everything right by giving the older one attention and reassuring her of your love. It's too bad the kitten doesn't have a playmate his own age and size and of course he will be more settled down by next year and things will be more peaceful.
Don't expect the two cats to use the same litterbox or food dishes and make sure the older gal has some space to herself where the kitten cannot annoy her.

Sorry to tell you but they will never get along, because I had a female cat ever since she was 5 weeks old and she was the only cat in the house. And she was 8 yrs. old when my little brother brought home a male kitten. The only time she put-up with him was when we took them to the vet. So in so many words she's jealous, she's use to being the only one an now she has to share and she doesn't like it. Now he's 5 yrs. and she would be 12 yrs. we think the neighbors my have killed her, she's been missing for 2 yrs. now. Don't force them to get along, I guess it would have been easier if the older cat was a male and the younger cat was a female.

Yeah, just give it time. I had the same problem years ago, cept I had 2 female cat/kitten. Older one hated the kitten(hated all cats really), eventually she learned to tolerate her. She even started to wait around the corner, and would pounce the kitten, like the kitten would do to her-and it was playing, not spiteful. Just keep showing the older one extra attention, give her treats and such. Be mindful too that she may stop using the litterbox, might want to pick up another to be on the safe side.

I think Peanut is on the right track. I have been in the same situation twice before. Sometimes my 2 cats fight. In the past when another cat died, the survivor was depressed. I adopted the next one and the old one perked up. That does not say that at times there are disagreements.

cats are naturally that way, the only way to handle this is time. I've been around cats all my life, had thirteen at one time when I was growing up. Cats get used to having everything to themselves and their routine. Once you bring another one into the picture, the older one will pout and be pissed for a couple of weeks to a month. she'll get over it, they always do. good luck

The older cat feels like he is being replaced. Just show him extra attention he will come around on his own terms.

its because your older cat is used to being alone and not having to share the attention try giving them time together your cat might be real territorial like mine i cant get any other cat/kitten without her hurting it so i have to just stick with her and no one else but cats are/can be very territorial and get jealous so try to spend equal time with both and show them that you are going to pay attention to both of them and you know what it might not work you might not be able to keep them both GOOD LUCK give them both a good head scratch for me LOL
