You did not say if you were married, or having sex with more than one partner a year. Hate to break it to you, but, a condom. Safer in case of STD's, but a little pricey if you want a really good one for the "feel." If you are not with the same partner that has been there a year or more, NO oral. Please get tested on a regular basis. But definitly condoms. Yikes, did not mean to sound preachy but unfortunately that is our world today. You won't get the mood swings, won't gain weight and you will live a lot longer and healthier.

The best choice will depend on what you want and need. I highly recommend checking with planned parenthood, your local health department, www.goaskalice.com etc for more info than I can give you here, but here is an overview. I am going to assume you are aware of the risk of STDs, and not include info about them here.

The pill. Highly effective for preventing pregnancy. It has been known to lessen cramps and shorten the number of days of your period and make it very predictable. On the downside it can effect you immune system, might cause you to gain weight, etc. Some women function better on the pill, it stabilizes their emotions, others it causes severe mood swings and can kill the sex drive (which is effective, though not too much fun)

The patch, similar to the pill, but you only have to remember it once a week.

Depo shot. Similar to the above two but you only need to remember it 4 times a year. Side effects seem to be more pronounced with this one. Before you try it I would recommend trying one of the other two first, just to see how your body reacts to the hormones.

There is also the cervical ring you can have inserted that effects your hormones as well. Sorry don;t have much info on that.

Condoms. Great barrier method, very effective when used properly. They can lessen sensation and of course, you need to stop and make sure one is on. Again some women have a latex allergy, that makes many condoms unusable.

IUD. Sounds scary but they have made some incredible advancements with them in the past few years and many women have switch to them. These are for long term use and you need to have your gyn insert it. Not sure of all the side effects for these, but I know one friend who is very happy with it nad has not problem. One change she mentioned is that she rarely gets her period anymore.

The rhythm method. All natural, low cost, not highly effective.

Diaphragm and cervical caps. Not as popular as they used to be.

Spermicidal jelly, foam etc.

Spermicidal film. I have a friend that swears by this, though I know availability is not great.

Hope this gets you started. Again I urge you to do a bit more research and weigh your options, try a few, see what works best for you.

Try an IUD although I'm not sure if its recommended to women who haven't had children. This device can be inserted for up to five years. As long as you have your regular checkups there isn'y anything to worry about. Usually there are no side-effects.
