I'm a high school teacher. I require oral presentations in some of the classes i teach. I don't do it cuz i hate students but because it's part of helping to (eventually) make you a more well-rounded citizen. (Honest!)

Here are a few tips that might help you be less nervous when you're up there. Some of them might sound silly to you, so ignore those--but i've watched hundreds of students get up to do the dreaded oral presentation, and i have a good feeling for what works and what doesn't.

Here, in no kind of order at all, are my tips to you:

1. Get lots of sleep the night before. Be well-rested, ESPECIALLY if you have to do this presentation near the end of the day when you're more tired.

2. Pick out a couple of people you're comfy with and focus on them (mostly) through your presentation.

3. DO NOT READ OFF YOUR NOTECARDS!!!!!!! <-- automatic downgrade of one letter grade in my classes

4. Rehearse your speech alone, to your parents, to your friends, alone again, to the dog/cat/bird. The object is SAY the words enough times so that you're comfy with them. (No. Reading them over and over to yourself is not the same thing.)

5. If you screw up, don't panic. Look up at me, i'll smile encouragingly back at you. Take a deep breath. Square your shoulders. Start the messed-up part over again. It'll all be fine.

6. Do not chew gum (if your school allows it at school) or your hair or your pencil or anything else while you're trying to speak.

7. Speak more slowly then you think you should. This is because you're going to be scared and scared students R A C E through thier presentations.

8. If you have visual aids, PLEASE insure that (a) you talk about the visual aid during your presentation (think of your audience [teacher and classmates] as really slow, slwo enough so that you have to expain everything thoroughly), (b) it is big enough to be seen in the back rows and (c) it pertains to your topic.

Hmmmm. What else? I can't think of anything else at the moment. I hope this helps you.

I used to be the same way, and despite everyone's advice of "picture everyone in their underwear" or whatever, none of that really worked for me.

The best thing for me was to be super-prepared, to the point where I had no doubt that I would do fine. That helped ease my fears of embarrassing myself. After that, I also started using visuals (Power Point, handouts, etc.) because it takes the focus off of me and places it on something else (if everyone's looking at the handout, they aren't looking at me!) It also gets a better grade, because the teacher notices how prepared you are!

Just remember: everyone else is in the same boat. Everyone. And at the end of the day, no one is going to think about how you did, because they'll probably be worrying about how well THEY did.

I like to walk around a little bit and make eye contact with a few random people in the class. It loosens me up and all my friends say it makes me look cool and in control. Sometimes I'll even ask someone a question about my subject as part of my presentation. One of my teachers told me that she thought that was very cool, also.

Well practicing always helps me become less nervous. Just remember that everyone who's watching you is probably just as nervous as you b/c they have to go sooner or later. They probably aren't even paying attention to you b/c they are thinking about what they are trying to say for their speech.

The one easiest thing to do is to stare at one point in the wall and never look at your buddies because then they will make you laugh for x reason. have confidence in yourself and do your BEST!!

Really understanding whatever you are speaking about. Be passionate. If you know your stuff then you have nothing to worry about.
