My best friend's uncle, with whom she lives, doesn't pay any attention whatsoever to the world around him or the people in it. She once told him she was going to a new hairdresser because she didn't like how the old one did her hair, and the he asked immediately afterward, "Why don't you just find a new stylist?" Or she'll ask him to please not smoke in their apartment due to her asthma, only to find him standing close enough to an open window for the smoke to come right back inside. He claims she hadn't made these requests, but she and I both know he did as I was there. I find this inattentiveness to be the lowest form of rudeness. What do you think?

How old is her uncle? He could have the beginning signs of Alzheimers. He may honestly not remember the requests.

He should go for a complete physical, including blood work, to rule out a medical reason for his behavior.

I think you and your best friend need to be a little more considerate of an older adult, who may well have a medical reason for his behavior.

Well this won't be picked as best answer, but I'm going to go on the assumption that the uncle has has his home in the apartment for at least some time. Your friend is his guest, and she should act accordingly. If he is smoking by a window, he has made an effort to accommodate her. That's what a host would do.

It's his home, his world, and if he's paying the rent, it's his call.

When your friend can get her own place, she can set her own standard of graciousness towards guests in her own home.

He is disrespectful and full of himself. See him outside of the apartment-he isn' likely to change.
