Congratulations on being a great dog owner and taking the initiative to help your dog lose weight! Being overweight can contribute to a lot of different health problems such as diabetes and arthritis.

A lot of people have suggested a calorie reduced food. This is a great idea, but you need to realize that your cannot feed this food free choice. Talk to your veterinarian about setting up a feeding schedule. The amounts that you find on the food bag may not be appropriate for your dog (some feed companies do overestimate a bit).

When you determine how much food your dog should get, mark a container with the EXACT amount your dog should be fed. That way anyone who feeds your dog knows how much he should be getting.

Watch treats. Make sure your dog is only getting a set amount of treats a day and no table scraps. Also, watch out for those rawhide bones - too many of those can contribute to weight gain as well!

The biggest secret to success is sticking to a plan!! Work on increasing your dog's exercise slowly. Do weekly or biweekly weigh-ins at your vet clinic. Make sure you record your dog's progress.

Good luck!

I have heard that eco-friendly beans will make a dogs drop some weight. some diabetic dogs were prescribed eco-friendly beans to save their weight down. The beans must be mixed with the dry nutrients. For a corgi i'd imagine 1 million/4 a can once an afternoon will be adequate. also there are quite some dogs meals that are low calorie. i'd verify with the dogs proprietor till now doing something first.

Put him on a calorie reduced food. You need to change his food gradually so he doesn't get the runs. Make sure he doesn't get too many treats. If you want to give him treats, try giving him a few raw vegetables (carrots, broccoli).

He also needs regular exercise, but you need to be careful to build him up just like a person would. You start off walking maybe 20 minutes, and gradually increasing speed and distance. You need to watch him because you want to tire him out, but you don't want him fatigued.

(If he's a golden retriever and weighs 180 pounds, he's huge. My large Irish Wolfhound was only 170 pounds!)

Change to a weight control formula food. (Be sure to slowly introduce the new food by mixing it with the existing food first, or else you'll have a dog with diarrhea!) And lay off the treats for a while.

And take walks, don't over do it, but get him active.

Cut down on what you feed him, give him plenty of water and walk him a lot. If you don't get his weight under control, you will loose him. Try a diet dog food available at your vet. Can't believe you haven't talked to your vet (if you have one) about this serious problem. I would also have the vet check his thyroid to see if it is working properly.

Are you sure about that weight? Seems a little high.
But,:::
dogs need a place to run, pay attention to what and how much you feed the dog, if the dog is old and is not active-cut food intake.
