Why can the body of a watermelon support so much weight?

because it is oval in shape. a watermelon that is not perfect oval can carry les weight than an almost oval watermelon. the shape makes it strong.... but it should be wide side down.

just like an egg.

honey, watermelons do not hang in the air, they lie on the ground, so no need for the plant to be strong if that is what you mean.
