What is the name of the medication that doctors give to patients to get rid of drug addictions immediately? I think I read this somewhere, that there was a patient who was in a coma from cocaine use, and the doctors gave him a medication to get rid of his addictions. The author was asking why doctors don't give it out to all drug addicts. I was wondering what the name of the drug was, because I could possible do a good college paper on this topic. Thanks :)

There are a few different meds that can be given, depending on what the drug addiction is to. Naltrexone is used to help narcotic addicts who have stopped taking narcotics to stay drug-free. It is also used to help alcoholics stay alcohol-free. Methadone: The most common method of detoxification is to use Methadone in an approved clinic and slowly taper the patient down from his usual dose of illegal opiates to zero over a period of approximately 21 days. Buprenex is a new FDA med. Ultram is a drug that has some opiate properties and therefore relieves withdrawal symptoms.

There is no such thing as a drug that gets rid of addictions immediately. Methadone is a treatment for heroin addicts. They become addicted to the methadone instead of heroin. The difference is that the methadone does not get them high, does not cost hundreds of dollars per day, does not keep them in touch with drug dealers and is not illegal. It does keep them from going through the painful symptoms of withdrawal. It also keeps dirty needles out of their skin.

I have heard of Antabuse for alcohol addiction, and Methadone for heroin addiction... but neither is any guarantee.

I think the word is FANTASY, as in, There is NO such thing.

I f you can cite a reference, I'd be quite interested to see it.
