I think it is a result of more and more people deciding that neither party represents the direction that they would like this country to go in and they are trying to convey this to the party leadership.

Well, I'd say it could have something to do with the dissatisfaction with the Vietnam War and the inability of both parties to achieve success with it. Then, in the 1970's, the Watergate scandal occurred and even though it was a Republican scandal, it decreased the general public's confidence in politicians.
