IMO, yes you can. I have a very good lady friend and when we first became friends, we made it clear to each other that we must only ever be friends, even if feelings developed. We agreed to be totally honest with each other : even to saying "back off" if we started getting on each others nerves.
We talk about anything & everything. I've helped her through a period of depression on a couple of occasions. My shoulders have been soaked with her tears. She knows all my "secrets". She is also a good friend to my missus. We e-mail daily (or text) to check that the other is OK. Missus asks almost daily : "How is nnnnnnn today?"
She has a key to our house and looks in on it when we are away.
We are trusted to be alone together in any situation (we would NEVER abuse that trust). When she comes round for a meal, I walk her home afterwards.
She has dropped in unexpectedly at the weekend and seen me sunbathing nude. Didn't bat an eyelid ... "You're my mate ... it's no problem". (Wife was there too, I will add ... LOL)
So, in MY circumstances, yes it IS not just possible, but real! :o)

Depends. Anyone who says they have friends of the opposie sex and have never at some stage or other weighed them up as potential lovers is lying. Sure, they may have friends of the opposite sex who have been friends for a long time etc but that is only after they've sized them up and decided whether they (a) could snog them or (b) would consider them as any sort of a partner. Most people have thought of their 'best friend' as more...it's human nature.

Why not ? Friendship is about personalities, common interests, and many other things. Its not about what the sex of a person is. Some of my best friends are guys.

My current best friend is a male and he has been for 6 years and there has never been anything more than friendship. I'm cried on his shoulder over men and he has complained to me about his girlfriends. My closest friends are guys and I am better for it, I can use their prospective to understand what my current guy is thinking or wanting.

Of course you can. A girl can be best friends with her brother without romantic feelings can't she?

It's happened for me plenty of times. Of course, I have had feelings for two or three, but that never resulted in anything, so I learned to just give up on it.
