Because it's a type of communication used to converse with other "speakers" of that language.

Although, ASL as a language differs from English in grammar and syntax, so it's not just a direct translation.

Sign language is similar to spoken language because it is a way for the people who cant talk at all and all so they can communicate with others this way too, And that's why sing language is so similar to the spoken language .

Although it is very similar to spoken english, the sentances aren't made up in the same way in which you would speak it. so you can't translate the spoken term word for word.
Alot of BSL is almost common sense for instance the sign for friend is hands shook together

british sign language is very emphatic- e.g. puching your fists together means brothers (fighting) and touching your nose means sisters (nosey).

wouldn't it be great if sign language was universal so Russian, Chinese, Congan, Peruvian and Spanish could all understand each other?
