The name is French and it doesn't sound like "you know what" It was probably butchered when you ancestors came to America. Going by it's sound and meaning the original name was Fageais or Fageait. That's how it likely would be spelled in Quebec or France. Roughly it means builder. Someone who knows French better than I could narrow down the meaning for you.
