Ugh. Hard Algebra Question.

Oooh can you also help me set up an equation to solve it!

i think the ecuation should be 14y=x and 20y=x+15, where x is the distance and y the time, so x=14y, and x=20y-15
then x=x, so 14y=20y-15
15=20y-14y
15=6y
15/6=y
y=2.5 hours

Wait, did any cyclist stop for a cool drink? That would add distance between them.

Equation:

Let X be the first cyclist, Y the second cyclist.

X = 20 mph
Y = 14 mph
Z = time spent to have a cool drink

X - (Y + Z)

Obviously, I did not do well in math class.

Cheers!

2.5 hours.
The first cyclists will travel 50 miles in 2.5 hours (20+20+10).
The second will travel 35 miles in 2.5 hours (14+14+7).
50-35 is the 15 mile difference.

the factor is (0,a million) and is parallel to 2x + y = 5. So the line you're finding has the comparable gradient by way of fact the above equation. yet, it quite is not in the y=mx+b style, so which you rearrange it to get y= -2x + 5. this potential the gradient of the line you are attempting to locate is -2. i'm quite doing some thing comparable in simple terms now, and use the formulation y-b=m(x-a). you place the values of (0,a million) in the areas of a and b, so which you get, using the gradient from the equation y=-2x+5, y-a million= -2(x-0) so, y-a million= -2x-0. SO, a) y= -2x + a million. for b), rearrange the 4x-y=12 formulation to get a gradient of four ( rearrange it so it quite is -y= -4x+12, then you definately take the - over to make it y=4x-12) In perpendicular strains, M1 (as a consequence 4) x M2 = -a million. So, the gradient of the line you're finding must be -a million/4. If it passes by (8,a million) you employ the comparable formulation as above to get b) 4y= -x+12 (by way of fact the gradient is -a million/4, once you have the formulation as y-a million= -a million/4(x-8), in case you multiply the finished element by 4, you get a effective, total selection gradient of -a million. yet, you may multiply the y to get 4y and the -a million to get -4. you do no longer multiply the numbers in the brackets.) besides the undeniable fact that, this is probably not perfect, as there is such quite some the thank you to locate the comparable element and it is the only way i will bear in recommendations ^^; I figured i might as nicely supply you the working too, in simple terms in case (:

Wouldn't it be 2 1/2 hours? They are 6miles apart every hour, so 2 hours, then split the last three miles in half along with the last hour. Could be wrong though lol :)

After 2.5 hrs because they start at 20,14 after hour 1. Then 40,28 after hour 2. Then 1/2 hr later 50,35 miles after hour 2.5.
