All the above answers are correct...but from personal experience ( twice ) a couple of hrs b4 my waters broke I noticed a couple of pangs in my back which were sharp and then went away until my labour progressed. Then my pains went from my tummy back to my back and that seemed worse than the ones in my tummy...Good Luck :)

Contractions usually start at the top of your belly and squeeze all the way down to the bottom. During a contraction you will feel pressure in your vagina and rectal area. A "good" contration lasts about 30-45 seconds. and are about 2 mins apart.

You feel them all over your belly, a true contraction is when your entire uterus compresses and squeezes, followed by your abdominal muscles and even your back muscles.

Your cervix simply dialates and opens.
