Various versions of the AK-47 are the most widely produced weapon in the world (especially with Communist forces). The HK G3A3 and M16A2 are also very popular arms in African and South American conflicts with Anti-Communist forces.

The Automat Kalishnikova 47 (AK-47) chambered in 7.62x39mm is the most popular assault rifle in the world. Regular armies from Finnland to China have adopted it and have added their own flair to it. This firearm and its variants have had a place on the battlefield in every war since the 1950's. Other popular guns include Belgium FN-FAL, a rifle chambered for the heavier 7.62x51mm NATO round. H&K G3 and variants also are popular, and the M-16 and its variants are spread all over the world. These 4 guns are probably the most popular and populace military small arms on the planet.

The AK-47, built, obviously, in 1947, has been used for so long, popularized by the soviets, used by its former satelites and continued being produced and used throughout the world (especially in the middle east and asia). Because of its age, cheap cost, ease of use and all, it has clearly become the worlds most popular military weapon (though the US does not use it, its M16 has not been around long enough, and is relatively expensive, therefore there are not as many in use)

You are correct insofar as pure numbers: the (former) Soviet Army, various armies of current CIS states such as Russia, the Chinese Army, most southeast Asian nations' armies, and untold hundreds of rebel/terrorist groups worldwide all use Kalishnikov (AK-47) rifles. I can't say with any certainty how many there are, but China's stocks alone outnumber pretty much every other weapon on Earth.

the AK-47 assault rifle is the most widely produced/prolific assault rifle in the world. it is reliable, easy and simple to operate and clean, and cheap to purchase. the weapon uses the same gas-operating mechanism that the M1 Garand does, except they put it on top of the weapon. it fires a 7.62 X 39mm round that, while not the most accurate, is effective in killing or wounding its intended target. since production began, over 100million of them have been produced by various countries.
