I am making a half sheet cake for a party. How many recipes of the cake will I need for the pan? Also, does anyone have any luck making it a two layer without breaking the cake when it comes out of the pan? Thanks.

One cake mix yields 4 to 6 cups of batter.

For the regular 11x15x2-inch pan, use 2 cake mixes. For the 12x18x2-inch pan, use 3 cake mixes.

To fill a normal size half sheet pan you'll need about 2 1/2 boxes of cake mix. I usually just fill one small single layer with the other half, and use it for extras :) Always good to have a little layer to snack on before the event that you're making the sheet cake for!

The way I make half and half cakes is pretty simple, and you only need to use one pan. I prepare both of my mixes and then use aluminum foil turned over several times until it is pretty sturdy. Place the foil in the middle of the pan to keep the batter separated as you pour the cakes. Just remove the foil before baking and that's it. I am sure there is a more "professional" way to make half and half cakes, but I just use what I have in my kitchen, and this method has worked well for me. Also, when I make a larger sheet cake, I use an inverted flower nail which helps the cake bake evenly. Make sure you grease the flower nail and put it in the middle of your pan before you pour the cakes. Hope this helps!
