I firmly believe that they see him as a possible intruder that threatens their territory. And worse after being warned -barking and growling- he returns to threaten and intimidate again.
If I get admitted next year in my masters I'll write a dictionary dogs-humans, it's true we need to understand them, and my fiels is linguistics.

A dog that barks at the postman believes he is in charge and has to protect his territory, you need to relieve him of this duty because if he is boss, he is put under stress. Every time you walk into the house you shouldn't greet him straight away ignore him for five minutes then greet him also make sure you eat before he does and let him see you eat then give him food. So when a dog does bark thank him for showing you someone is there, then you can tell him to go into a room or every time the postman goes past ignore the postman tell the dog to come to you and give him a treat for being quite, keep doing it and the problem should go away. Don't know if you wanted to no all that sorry if i went on.

He's a stranger. He invades the territory and makes strange high pitched metallic noises. He drops his scent mark right into the home. Barking makes him walk away again.
Wingman is right; all people need to do is introduce the dog to the postman - put the dog on the lead, take it on to the street and have them say hello there. If the dog is friendly have the postman give him a treat, then you all walk up the path together. It takes the heat out of the encounter.

Because Postman have a tendency of going out with housewives whilst husbands are at work, so dogs know what's happening . So dogs are actually doing a good job . Check the attitude your dog next time postman drops some letters .

i think it has to be his sack, i mean, you cant tell me there is just letters in that bag, would you climb a mountain, cross a muddy field, jump a few hedges and risk severe back problems just carrying a bag of letters,,,,,,,,,,no i dont suppose you would, and neither would i,,,,,,so............my theory is,,,,,,,theres not just letters in his sack, ......... maybe the postman has a fetish for dwarfs and carries these little people around in his sack and when crossing those muddy fields the postman gets THE URGE, and stops off behind a tree for a little bit of hows ya father......................i reckon dogs have fetishes for little people too, on account that their bones are so much smaller than ours and therfor easier to swallow, the dog then decides in order to get the goodies from the sack, the postman unfortunately for him,,,,,simply must die....

after putting way too much thought into this, i still reckon its a canny theory

lmfao

hope this helps

A dog that thinks he is the leader of his family will think that he has the responsibility to attack intruders. A daily visit from the postman will inspire rage in such a dog as he continually has to fend off this persistant invader.

More than just Territorial. There is also a respect thing going on. A dog owner that takes the time to introduce there dog to the mailman, and a mailman who carries even the cheapest of small dog treats can eliminate that negative action. I live in a small town and have known my mailman for 20 years at least so I trust him to offer Baylee a treat. Baylee however is not one of those dogs the mailman has to worry about but he shares with her anyway. You can see her and my birds from the link under my pic.

They don't hate him - it's not that personal. He's coming in on their territory and they treat him as though he were an intruder - also there's something about the snap of the letterbox, that makes them jumpy and when they're excited or nervous, they're more likely to attack. Most postmen/women are far too busy to make friends with every dog on their round, so they remain a stranger and a threat to the dog.

There territory been invaded and I also believe its the reflective strips the postmen have on their bags and jackets, can you imagine how that appears to a dog, my dog is fine if our postman puts his bag down outside our gate and has no jacket on, but in winter when hes dressed up for the elements in his reflective jacket she hates him, poor postie hey.
