I mean are retainers used to keep your teeth strait or to acually straiten your teeth? I know some people have braces to straighten their teeth and then when they get them off they get retainers to help keep their teeth straight.
But what would the best option be?

A "retainer" is just that, a retainer, it "retains" the teeth in the position they have been put into by the orthodontia. Braces of some sort are required to make the correction and the retainer maintains it. Above answerer must have been very very young or asleep when those teeth were straightened.

Retainers are called retainers for a reason, they RETAIN the shape of the teeth AFTER braces come off. To actually straighten teeth, you must have braces. There are many different types of braces now, some that you can actually remove at night, some that are almost invisible because they fasten to the back of your teeth instead of in front. Talk to an orthodontist, there are many choices open to you if you want your teeth straightened.

braces are for straightening teeth. retainers are for keeping the teeth in that straight position after braces. if you want to straighten your teeth, your best bet is to go with braces. there are some other things out there like invisaline that is like a retainer but you switch it every month and so it shifts your teeth. still, braces are the best thing to do.

Actually you dont have to have braces to get a retainer. I had to use one when i never had braces, and yes they might straighten your teeth, it helped with my cross bite!

That's a question for your dentist after he examines your teeth.
