I recently changed my cats food not on purpose we ran out and i had to get brekkies from the local shop instead of go-cat!! she developed diarrhea, I did a little research on the internet and discovered i should with hold food for 24 hrs, then feed rice and chicken they day after, then the same mixed with her cat food, then the next day but her bk to her normal food, well the diarrhea has almost cleared up, still not quite right, and today she vomited not sure if she's over eaten, or i should have kept her the plain food longer!! I am most prob going to take her to vets tomorrow but i was just wonderin if anybody had any ideas!!

Do not feed for 24 hours (this will not hurt the cat) then feed a smaller amount then what you usually give to see if she keeps it down and if the stools form.
The correct recipe is
3 parts rice
1 part cottage cheese
2 tbsp bran (the kind you use when you make muffins)
when they have loose stools
Only give this diet after 24 hours of fasting and for only 5 to 7 days then feed regular food in small amount through out the day.
If the stools are still loose then a vet check is what should be done next. Most vet would reccomend the advice give above.

Hi there,
starve your cat for 24 hours then feed it just cooked chicken and rice then over a week gradually increase the dry biscuits and reduce the chicken and rice, It is best to keep the cat on nothing but dry as it is better for the teeth and guts, but you can give wet food as a treat. It also sounds like your cat may have a sensitive stomach, you can buy cat foods that are specifically made for cats with sensitive stomachs, some of the best foods about now are Nutro, Burns which is holistic, Almo nature which is completely organic and so not hard on the stomach, James Well beloved which is a good food and Hills science plan which vets would recommend. Don't worry too much if you are worried and what i have said doesn't work then take your cat to the vets.

You didn't say how long after you changed the food there was a problem - it may not be the food so still get your cat checked out.

They get diahorrea for other reasons such as stress. Has anything different been happening in your house that might even have caused that - visitors the cat didn't know? doing DIY and making mess or noise or had workmen in the house?

I hope it is something simple but take it to the vet anyway:-)

If the cat is not running a fever then I would say it is the food. Animals dehydrate quickly when they are sick and experiencing diarrhea and it could turn serious soon if the cat is not drinking. Contact your vet for instructions. Not everything on the internet is factual and verification from a vet on what to do will help your peace of mind.

TAKE THE CAT TO THE VET!! Sounds like the cat is dehydrated, they get that way if they are vomiting and have the poops. Is the cat drinking? If it's drinking, it will survive. Kitten food for the 1st full year of its life- then cat food (of only one type, so pick a popular brand so that this doesn't happen to you again :o)

I would defiantly take your cat to the vets as she could have an allergy to an ingredient in the new cat food you bought her or it could be worse as vomiting and diarrhea are two of the danger signs that a cat is sick. I would also disspose of the rest of the cat food in case her stomach disagrees with one of the food's ingredients.

It seems the new food isn't settling well with her. Keep her on the plain food til you take her to the vet.

I know in this case it was impossible, but cat's foods should never be switched suddenly.

dont worry about taking cat to the vet, im a trainee learning at home, feed her boiled chicken if shes not back to normal then back onto her own food the diarrea will clear up within 48 hours.

keep her on plain food for another 24 hours she will be able to survive for a couple of days without food. If she has been out she may have eaten a stray mouse or bird that could have irritated her stomach again.

i have 9 cats in my house and when we change thier food they all get diarrhea so we just leave them biscuits down and a bowl of water we clean the litter trays not just empty them but wash the trays, when also do this when the cats are sick. you just have to watch them and let them know that your going to look after them. when they start to pick up you can start to put them back onto thier food in small amounts and give them little treats like those little buscuit treats.
