will gesso work on top of oil?

Don't do it - although the oil underpainting may feel dry, it will still take months to cure, even if you've thinned it down. Oils cure by oxidation, so the oxygen must reach the paint or the oils won't cure properly.

Plus - the acrylic gesso will actually absorb the oil from beneath, even after the oils have cured - causing the top layer of acrylic paint to discolour at best, peel off at worst, and the results may not be seen for years to come.

I have always been taught that this is not a good idea..because while it appears that the gesso is covering..it will eventually peal off...just scrapped a canvas myself and didn't clean it in time...plan on either tossing it..or painting it w/oil based plain white....
when I was feeling bady about the horrific landscape I ended up scapping, a friend quoted Picasso...he said that all artists have 10,000 really bad paintings in them and they should just be painted to get them over with....I figure I have 9,995 bad paintings left to go....

I hate to be the one to tell you, but gesso, a water-based product, will not stick to oil paint. You can buy a new canvas or stick with oil paint.

oh goodness, unless you are planning on painting a lame portrait or hoping your painting will last for millions of years you should be just fine. If your under-painting was done with lots of medium or thinner such as gamsol paint over it when its dry. Your underpainting is so thin little if no cracking will occur. I paint over paintings all the time and I assure you I lose little sleep over breaking the rules of painting.
