I realize that people are against cloning just to retrieve stem cells, but how can they argue so vehemently about the subject when most do not even fully comprehend it? Stem cells are cells which are unspecialized. That is to say they can develop into any of the 220 different types of cells in your body. Embryonic stem cells can only be found within the first 10 days after fertilization and removing them means immediate death for the embryo. The other type of stem cells, called adult stem cells, exist in everyone, but can only differentiate into certain types of cells. That's right, everyone has stem cells in them, which, by using newly developed techniques, could be cultured to produce living tissue which could be replaced into the body. Stem cells and, obviously, stem cell research can only result in cures for diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and a ton of other of conditions. So why is everyone so against stem cell research when it can only do us good?

The stem cells that scientists want to use are from embryos that ARE DOOMED TO DIE ANYWAY!!!! Hundreds of embryos are just thrown away or put in freezers every day when they could be USED TO SAVE LIVES!!!

Once again, the STEM CELLS SCIENTIST WANT TO USE ARE FROM EMBRYOS THAT ARE DOOMED TO DIE ANYWAY, how is that immoral? They will just be thrown away anyway. They have NO chance of living, so why can't we use them? Because George Bush and many other people aren't educated enough on the subject and/or they are just very ignorant.

I do not oppose stem cell research but I can accept the Presidents view of it. Pro Lifers believe that using the stem cells of aborted fetuses would create more abortions or it would be benefiting from murder, in the same way using donated organs from executed prisoners could create an ethical problem. I am pro choice but I understand their point of view. I think the pro stem cell crowd has been oversold on stem cell research. They act as if it the second coming of Christ. I think that is an example of diseases being politicized for somebody's partisan games. Stem Cell research is NOT a panacea, it will not cure everything. If it was a panacea then capitalism would take over, if it was going to cure everything, then what pharmaceutical company would not be interested in it? That being said I still do support stem cell research. I think the Presidents solution is very wise. Since there is a group that opposes it on credible grounds and a group that wants it; then they can only use the cells that are already in use; if they are spending federal money. The Bush plan DOES NOT PROHIBIT ANY STEM CELL RESEARCH! It only stops federal money for new lines. It is not simple.

everyone????????? I'm 100% for it! Pro lifers and Christians are usually the people against it, and my belief is that if they are so against it, they should not receive any medical treatments that been established via stem cell research, they surrender their right to be saved when they made the process of making the cure such a nightmare for medical scientists....I also ask if you are Pro Life why are you against saving lives?

Embyonic stem cell research kills another human being in order to provide benefits for another.

That is immoral and unacceptable.

The Nazis did stuff like that in the 1930's and 40's and were rightly condemned for it.

It's just as bad now.

To me, it has such potential to start us down a road in which little, less powerful people are butchered to heal bigger, more powerful people. I'm more interested in the adult stem cell experiments, which seem to be yielding better results.

Most people are only against embryonic stem cell harvesting. That's killing babies, real people just like you and I. Embryos are people too. What if someone had decided to use us for stem cell research when we were embryos? We sure wouldn't be having this conversation.
