It depends on where you are going but Airtran Airways is a pretty cheap airline. They are mostly on the east coast. They only go as far as Nevada and California for the west coast.

try LTU they are a german airline so you might have to connect in new york and then in frakfurt but their transatlantic flights are about $250 as opposed to $1300 or so
