With the discussion on the War in Iraq turning to the Iraqis being responsible for their own military security, it occurred to me the best way to accomplish this might not be over there, but to bring Iraqi soldiers here and train them just as we do American soldiers, then returning them to Iraq after training is complete. Doing so might even ultimately foster better relations between the two nations. But is it even feasible?

I don't see why it isn't feasible, but suspect that if US military commanders thought it was a better option to training them on our bases there, they would already be doing it. Some people on the political left seem to think the Bush admnistration and everyone involved with it is incompetent, but that definitely isn't true. They want to bring this Iraqi situation to a positive conclusion as much as anyone, and if training Iraqi troops here in the US would make that happen, they would already be doing it.

It's probably better to train them where they will be working. It's the same reason why the US military trains their soldiers in different areas of the worl (for example, Jungle Warfare training).

It's not enough, however, to think that if we put them through the same training and training length as US soldiers that they will be equivalent. The US military has had a long period of time to develop a stable and dependable officer and senior enlisted corps that cannot be duplicated easily or quickly.

Well, they are being trained on our bases there, under supervision of our military. I hope it doesn't backfire on us too horribly someday.
