The thief on the cross repented and accepted Christ as the son of God. That is why Christ said this day He would see him in paradise. You do not have to be baptized to be saved or to go to heaven as was the case with the thief. We get baptized as a step of obedience to the Lord signifying our relationship with Him.In the scriptures it was always after the person chose to believe in Christ that they then went to be baptized. John the Baptist baptized for the remission of sins, where once Christ went to Calvary and shed His blood for all, our faith to believe He can save us from our sins is what redeems us.

The theif on the cross lived in a time when the Law of Moses was in effect. He died before Jesus rose from the dead to establish the New Law (the New Testament) and before Jesus gave the command about baptism (Mark 16:16). We now live in subjection to the New Testament. The theif could not have obeyed a form of baptism that had not yet been commanded.

Secondly, the death, burrial, and ressurection that baptism now represents (Romans 6:3-4) had not completely occurred at the time the theif died.

Third, the theif was in direct contact with Christ at his death and was able to make his appeal directly to him for forgiveness. We are not in that position. Through baptism, we contact Christ's death (where his saving blood was shed)(Romans 6:3-4, Col 2:12). Baptism is our appeal for a good conscience. That is why 1 Peter 3:21 says baptism "now saves".

Notice this verse: " baptism now saves you--not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience--through the resurrection of Jesus Christ." (1 Peter 3:21 NASB)

Without baptism today, we have not contacted Christ's death (saving blood). This is why baptism washes away sins (Acts 22:16) and is "for the remission of sins" (Acts 2:38) today.

Jesus commanded baptism, and obediance to him is necessary for salvation (Heb. 5:9)

Romans 6:7 says that he who has died has been acquitted of his sin. Those that did not exercise faith in Jesus will have an opportunity to do so when they are resurrected (John 5:28,29)
John the Baptist was preparing people for when Jesus would start declaring the good news of the Kingdom. That baptism was different from Christian baptism which is in symbol of a persons dedication to serve God.

What Hope for the Evildoer?

That man did not qualify to rule with Jesus in heaven, He was not a follower of Jesus, it was because of what He said to Jesus that day, that Jesus promised him paradise. The word “paradise” is taken from the Greek language, and in that language it means a parklike garden. The Greek word used to translate the Hebrew noun gan, meaning “garden,” is pa·ra′dei·sos. The Scriptures from Matthew to Revelation were written in the Greek language, and this Greek word was used in recording the utterances of the Lord Jesus Christ when he was suffering the penalty of death on a torture stake at Calvary on Nisan 14 of the year 33 C.E.

He is not included among those to whom Jesus said: “You are the ones that have stuck with me in my trials; and I make a covenant with you, just as my Father has made a covenant with me, for a kingdom.” Yet, Jesus promised that the evildoer would be in Paradise with him. How will that promise be fulfilled? What, then, did Jesus mean when he promised the repentant evildoer that he would be in Paradise?

The first man and woman, Adam and Eve, were placed by Jehovah God in Paradise, a garden of pleasure called Eden. (Genesis 2:8, 15) Eden was on earth, and God purposed that the entire earth be a paradise. However, Adam and Eve disobeyed God and were put out of their beautiful home. But Jesus revealed that Paradise would be restored and that it would come to include the entire earth. In fact King David said this:

Psalms 37:29  The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever. King James Bible

By means of Christ’s heavenly rule, God’s original purpose for the entire earth to be a paradise will be fulfilled!

During this Kingdom rule, Jesus will fulfill his promise to the criminal who died alongside him. He will resurrect him, and that man will become an earthly subject of Jesus. Then the evildoer will be given an opportunity to meet God’s requirements and live forever under the rule of the Kingdom.

I do not believe that baptism saves you. I believe that repentance from sin and accepting Jesus as your Lord saves you. The thief did this on the cross. "
Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom".
Luke 23:42
Baptism is an outward confirmation of salvation and a symbolism of burial and death of the "old man" and rising to newness of life (resurrection).

While Jesus was hanging on a stake, one of the evildoers alongside him, observing that Jesus was not deserving of punishment, requested: "Jesus, remember me when you get into your kingdom." Jesus replied: "Truly I tell you today, You will be with me in Paradise." (Lu 23:42, 43) In effect, Jesus said: 'On this dark day, when my claim to a kingdom is to outward appearances highly unlikely, you express faith. Indeed, when I do get into my kingdom, I will remember you.' (See PARADISE.) This would require a resurrection for the evildoer. This man was not a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. He had been engaged in wrongdoing, lawbreaking meriting the death penalty. (Lu 23:40, 41) Therefore, he could not hope to be one of those receiving the first resurrection. Additionally, he died 40 days before Jesus ascended into heaven and hence before Pentecost, which was 10 days after that ascension, when God through Jesus anointed the first members of those who will receive the heavenly resurrection.-Ac 1:3; 2:1-4, 33.

The evildoer, Jesus said, would be in Paradise. The word means "a park or pleasure ground." The Septuagint rendered the Hebrew word for "garden" (gan), as at Genesis 2:8, by the Greek word pa·ra´dei·sos. The paradise in which the evildoer will be would not be "the paradise of God" promised to "him that conquers," at Revelation 2:7, for the evildoer was not a conqueror of the world with Jesus Christ. (Joh 16:33) The evildoer would therefore not be in the heavenly Kingdom as a member of it (Lu 22:28-30) but would be a subject of the Kingdom when those of "the first resurrection" would, as kings of God and Christ, sit on thrones, ruling with Christ for a thousand years.-Re 20:4, 6.

Baptism is a sign of faith, the evil doer had faith in Jesus. That is why when young, unbaptiszed children die. They get to be ressurected, cause they weren't given a chance to prove themselves, just like the evil doer. He was not given a chance to get baptised, but his faith in Jesus saved him.

Baptism is not a requirement for forgiveness. If you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord then you shall be saved. All though baptism is important, your heart condition is more important and sometimes people are unable to be baptised before they die.

Adam was a perfect man..he disobeyed and was punished with death for him and his offspring.
Jesus came to earth to ransom mankind back from death. He died for our sins.
Baptism in water is an outward sign of your dedication to Jehovah God.
Jesus told the man.....today I tell you. ....you will be with me in paradise....meaning...you will be resurrected to life when I am king of the messianic kingdom for 1000 years.
That kingdom started in 1914.
during the 1000 years satan will be abyssed, mankind will be resurrected, all humans will be perfect again...the earth will be a paradise again.

Jesus was born a Jew, his mother was a Jew, he lived a Jewish life, and died a Jew.

Jews believe that we will all be resurrected here on earth when the messiah has brought peace on earth and justice for all mankind. There is no eternal punishment in Judaism. Christians borrowed hell from Zoroastrianism. If you want to know more about hell, you'll have to find it in the NT because it's not mentioned in the Torah (OT).

"...they shall beat their swords into plowshares,
and their spears into pruning hooks;
nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
neither shall they learn war anymore." (Micah 4:3.

The theif on the cross was responding in faith the only way he knew how with limited knowledge of Jesus. Jesus was impressed with his display of faith based on less than perfect knowledge of him.

Likewise he couldnt be baptized into Jesus death, burial, and resurrection until it actually happened.
