Measure the length and width of living space in your house and multiply together. L x W. Do not measure the garage, basement, or attic space since they do not count.

Take a tape measure and go outside. Measure the width and depth of the house on the exterior (the footprint). Multiply the two numbers. That is the square footage of that floor. Then multiply by the number of stories the house is.
An example, a house that is 20ft (wide) by 30ft (long) has a footprint of 600 sq ft. If it is two stories the space is 1200 sq ft. This is usually the heated "living" space. A basement on this house would be 600 sq ft.

To figure square foot for painting a two storie house, multiply LengthxWidthx2. One gallon of paint will cover between 300 to 400 square foot, but 400 is stretching it.

Measure each room separately, or the whole length and width of the house. If it's 20 X 40', that's 800 square feet. Do each floor (level).

Measure from front to back, then from side to side and multiply the 2 results by each other. The answer will be the square footage. If the shape is not an absolute square or rectangle however you will need to measure any additions as separate squares and or rectangles and add the resulting squared results on.

If you own the home, look at a copy of the appraisal. Or call an escrow company and they can give you the square footage. Its faster than breaking out the measuring tape, which will work too.
