I would definatelly choose 2 destinations: Bagkok and one of the Adaman sea resorts.
Not to confuse you I will just list Places in Bangkok worth visiting:
1. Grand Palace (even those who haven't been to Bagkok will tell you to check it out)+ Wat Po(it's nearby)
2. Floating Market +Rose Garden (is one of the best tours you could order from any tourist agency from Bagkok - trust me you won't have to look for it)
3. Lady Boy show in Asia Hotel (order with dinner but without transportation) - the food is fascinating, but getting there by taxi is a lot cheaper and faster
4. Authaya - still don't know how to spell it - but take a tour! it's great+ don't attempt to get there on your own - worthless
5. Snake Farm
The only scam we faced was associated with taxi drivers trying to get more money then they should - use taxi meter taxis( it's not a problem anyways we were robbed for 2 bucks)
have the best fun you can! It's an awesome place! It's gets hard when you have to leave it!

You come to the right place girl. I'm from Thailand myself so here is my suggestions. Last time when my boyfriend from the US visiting Thailand, Bangkok is the first stop (it is where you plane is gonna land anyway.) Grand Palace is a MUST. You have to visit this place..very amazing. Also go to Water Market near Bangkok. Go to Thai boxing matches at Rajchadamneon Stadium. Go buy cheap stuff at JJ market. If you have more times, go up north to Chiang Mai. This province is also a MUST for tourists. Oh gosh....so many to tell ya, but before you leave, visit this website: www.thai-blogs.com Tons of info you will need.

Kanchanaburi is pretty amazing, thats where the bridge over the river kwai is. Also Jim Thompson's house in Bangkok is well worth a visit. Going up Baiyoke 2 tower gives a really good view of Bangkok. In the evening when all the lights are in, it's just incredible

There is so much to do and see in Thailand. The Lonely Planet Guide is excellent and suggests a number of itineries which are pretty good. Also, if you are travelling solo and you follow a lonely planet guide itinery then you'll probably hook up with other people travelling the same way.
The Grand Temple, Wat Po is a must, the hill treks up past Chiang Maid are excellent and all the beaches and Islands around Krabi are great.

I spent months there a couple years ago. Beach wise Thong Nai Pan in the north of Ko Phagnan is the most gorgeous beach. Try and stay away fromt he tourist traps like Phuket and Samui.
Chatachuck market near BKK airport is huge and sells everything you can imagine. A trek in the jungles near Chang Mai is also good - elephant rides and meeting villagers. Also around there, try a Thai cookery class and make your own green curry...yum!

With that much time in your hand:
- Chiang Mai, up north. Tranquil, unspoilt still and not a tourist trap in many areas. Mountains, temples, the nature.
- Bangkok. Modern city. Spoilt for choices for shopping, eating and entertainment.
- Hua Hin. Near Bangkok. City-like but slow pace of life. Nice beaches.
- Phuket. For a change. The beach and sea sports/activities. Diving, snorkeling, river rafting.

Chiang Mai is a must.
Go trekking from Chiang Mai.
Ride an elephant, float down the river on a bamboo raft, see some hill-tribes, hike in the jungle - a great 4 or 5 day experience.
Visit Doi Suthep Temple. Visit the handicraft factories.
If you are from UK, get yout visa from Thai consulate in Hull - http://www.thaiconsul-uk.com/

There is thousands of sights. But what you like?
Temples: Grand Palace and Wat Pho in Bangkok and maybe a trip to Phanom Rung.
Nature and sight trips. River Kwai 2 day tour offer amazing landscapes and stunning view from the train. Many agencies offer this trip including trips to hot springs, waterfalls, tiger temple, floating market etc.
North Thailand: Chiang Mai / Chiang Rai with hill tribes. Amazing views from the mountain Doi Suthep.
Beaches: many all over....but I still like koh Tao best. Its a small isolated island out in the golf of Siam. Have bus and trips to this place from Bangkok also. read... http://on-koh-tao.com/
If you like bars, music, girls etc, you don't have to go to Pattaya. All tourist places have this.
Save the last 2 days for shopping in Bangkok.

When you get to Bangkok head for the Ko San Road area, it,s the place all the backpackers start out from. It,s safe there, very cheap accomodation and eats. The big plus is you are with people your own age, who will be able to share all their travell tips with you. Also it gives you time to get over your jet lag and climate change, culture shock. Have a good tour.
