By scraping off white spots, you are releasing lots of pathogens simultaneously which may invade your blood circulation and cause serious problems in your body, including the heart and kidneys. This can also cause tonsil tummy as lots of load of pathogens and pus/debris is shed in one go.

Best would be to consult a doctor and based on the throat swab culture and antibiotic sensitivity test, some antibiotics will have to be prescribed for you. Gargles and mouth washes would help to a certain extent only, until proper action is initiated to kill all the pathogens that are causing this problem.

The chances of having a strep infection based on physical exam findings are based on the following: Swollen tonsils with pus pockets, enlarged and tender lymph nodes under your jaw, and a fever greater than 99.5.

If you have one then there is a 25% chance, two about 50% chance, three there is about a 75% chance you have strep. If you do you should get an antibiotic. You can get complications from the infection including a kidney and heart infection. If you have two or more of the above symptoms, I would proceed to see a doctor. Otherwise try home remedies.

I have never seen any literature about scraping the pus pockets but 1 - it doesn't do any good and 2 - it might be introducing the bugs into you blood stream making you sicker. I don't think you should continue. Use ibuprofen or Tylenol for pain and fever. Gargle with a combination of salt water, baking soda, and three crushed aspirin. It hurts at first but soothes the sore throat for about an hour. Or you could try "Aspergum." Get plenty of fluids and rest. I hope you are feeling better. Good luck.

Are the white spots attached? A physician assistant below mentioned correctly that there is no literature on the topic. He mentioned STREP and this is consistent with pus loosely adherent to the membranes of the throat. If the white spots are attached, it is more likely Coxsackie virus and will clear by itself.

If you were to ask me in the office, I would tell you to stop scraping because it will not shorten your course and will not make you feel better. Scraping is pressing the membranes and pushing out the fluids, this gives the illusion that scraping makes your mouth feel better. The issue is if you scrape and injure the tissues, some mouth bacteria could get into the tissues and make you worse. Gargling with salt water is a good idea.

Hope you feel better soon.

Just use the warm salt water gargle. If the white spots persist you may have a Leptothrix infection and need a tonsillectomy.

I used to get tonsilitis every month for like 2 years, and finally got my tonsils taken out at the age of seven. I haven't one single case of tonsilitis since.

yeah dont do that...you are opening up the pus pockets that are forming on your tonsils and introducing it to the inside of your mouth and down into your stomach......gargle with hydrogen peroxide and warm water...put i cap full of hydrogen peroxide in a cup of warm water and gargle....do not swallow it though......stop popping the pus pockets or you will become sick to your stomach.....
