the I agree. I am white and no one forced me to learn it. I learned it with a desire to open new doors and horizons for myself. It is a beautiful language and has also opened doors to new friendships and learning of cultural differences.

Why some people in this forum refer to Hispanic only as Mexican? Or they think that speaking Spanish is speaking Mexican? Come on people, read more about geography. There are more countries beside 50 states. Or probably, for your guys, South American means all countries below you (north america) and you don't divide the Latin America like this: Central America which includes Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama. South America which includes: Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, French Guiana, Suriname, Paraguay, Uruguay? Why to refer to one country when you are talking about SPANISH SPEAKER? Example: Mexico. One thing is refusing to learn Spanish and onother thing is being ignorant when it comes to talk about geography.
With the comments made by some people here, it is proved that probably they found out after September 11 that Iraq and Afganistan existed in the World Map. Before September 11, those countries never existed for them but only the 50 states and Mexico.

How many languages does Bill Gates speak? Paul Allen? George W. Bush? How many people in Forbes top 100 Americans list are bilingual? I would hazard to say none.
The real leaders of this country have much more efficient ways to spend their time learning a new language. The highest levels achieved by bilingual folks are leaders of these ultra-liberal minority advocacy groups that annoy the hell out of the rest of the country. Can anyone say La Raza?
Look up over your head. See that flag? It's the flag of the United States of America. It's a country, perhaps you've heard of it, that was founded by English speakers, who's laws were drafted by English speakers, who's industry was created by English speakers, who's wars were fought by English speakers (how many bilingual generals were there in the Civil War? WWI? WWII? Vietnam?), and who's future will be wrought by English speakers?
Besides providing cheap manual labor for corrupt businesses, what have Spanish speakers contributed to the country? Wait! They're destroying our healthcare system! Isn't that an achievement? No? Well... They're ruining our public education !! Not an admirable achievement either? Hmm. Hey! They're very patriotic! Unfortunately they're waving the wrong flags!
Surely Spanish speakers have done something admirable...
Ah, I know! They got their sad, pathetic jokes of soldier's rear ends kicked during the Mexican War and the Spanish American War. That was a great morale boost to the American people. And that is the 'American' people, not the 'United Statesian' or 'USian' or whatever ridiculously stupid name the PC mafia has created for our citizens.
Heck, I think the only time a Spanish speaking country beat an English speaking country at anything was in soccer, and who gives a rat's *** about that boring game...

When the Spanish speaking illegals make it into Canada to do jobs Canadians won't do, do you think Canadians will have to start speaking Spanish as well?
It's already a bilingual country.
You don't sneak into a country and then demand everyone speak your language. That's just rude.

Hmmm. I don't think I can add something that hasn't already been said. So, I'll pile on.
Why should I learn your language? I'm an immigrant and we spoke Italian in the house. But, I learned English as did a great many immigrants. Huge numbers of Germans, Italians, Poles, Irish, etc. all came here an adapted to the USA.
Why can't you l? You should get with it.
I'm so sick of walking into a store and not being understood by poor english speakers.

The governing documents of this nation are written in English. And though many legal citizens of this country know other languages, English is the accepted norm in most situations.
If I were in an international business where I had to deal with people in other countries, it would behoove me to learn those languages. I am not. And in the business I am in, when I deal with someone who has a different primary language, it is up to them, not me, to bridge the communication gap. I can guarantee you in no other country, not even your native Mexico, do they try to learn English to deal with those not native to the country. Just try to place an order in a restaurant in France, Germany, Japan, China or anywhere else world wide without knowing the native language. No telling what you will have for lunch.
I am bilingual, however, due to a very dear friend of mine in high school who was a legal immigrant from Columbia. In exchange for helping her family with English, they helped me ace 4 years of high school Spanish. My father, although he never spoke Spanish, was multi lingual. He had English speaking parents, but had neighbors growing up in South Boston who were Hungarian, Portuguese and Italian, and he picked up parts of those languages as a young man.
Actually, I have more problems with those Americans who have never bothered to learn correct English. You can't understand many of them, either.

I speak Spanish because I chose to learn and not because I had to.I am successful and it has nothing to do with being able to speak Spanish.I never use it in my business and so its not a necessity for me.This the USA not Mexico.Any where besides California and the border states no one wants or needs to hire a bi lingual person .They want English speaking legal Americans.
Why don't some white women learn that you don't turn Mexican just because you sleep with one.You are still white and you are still an American.Love is fine but it shouldn't turn you blind...Men come and go but your country is like your mother .Its there for you always.
I speak several languages.English,Spanish,
French Cajun and Ive been taking Japanese,
since May.Its very difficult but I am going to
Japan next year on business and want to
learn as much as I can.To impress my
hosts there.

First of all, I know Spanish, but we need a cultural core to adhere to and that includes the English language. English speaking people shouldn't have to learn the language of individuals immigrating to this country. What if the next huge wave of immigrants spoke Arabic? Should we all have to learn that to? Would you learn it?

If you moved to France, would you expect everyone to speak spanish for you? If you moved to China, would they have to change their official language? How about Russia? Africa? Iran? Holland? Italy?
My grandparents immagrated here from Poland. They learned to speak English and sent their children to english speaking schools. They spoke Polish within the home when family was around, but English was the language that they spoke in public because that is what was expected.
Why should this country change what has been the standard for the last 200+ years? If you choose to live here, adapt to your surroundings. If you don't like our ways, then you should choose a different place to live that is more compatible with what you're looking for.

How is spanish going to better me after they deport all illegals immigrants. I would like to learn a language that would better my life not others. What about German or Japaneese. Those countries are very technologicaly addvanced. Our people need to be able to comunicat with these countries so we can compete. Why can't illegals learn english? Germans learn english in school. Why would we want our people to learn a language of a country that we don't compete with? By the way by spanish do you mean the language spoken in mexico or the language spoken in spain? They are different or so my spanish teacher said.
