is there a free download of a programme that will overwrite the control panels add/remove programmes. I have tried to delete several programme files without success

Yes, there is an excellent freeware program called Ccleaner.

It has its own add/remove programs tool as well as a cache cleaner and a registry cleaner and its pretty much foolproof - I've been using it for over a year!

But if you're having problems removing a program there will be a reason. They could be built into Windows, or they could be Trojans; in which case you may need an anti spyware as well.
Symantec software is notorious for being impossible to uninstall without help, and its not the only software company that invades your pc.

What kind of pc programmes are you trying to delete? if they are windows integrated apps like control panel or other items contained in the control panel then unfortunately i think they are embedded into the operating system. Just like you can't remove Internet explorer as that is hard-coded into the windows infrastructure. Maybe try Linux but hey i would love to as well but haven't got the balls just yet(Vista is gonna be full of holes tho). Maybe tell me what you want to delete and i can try and help.

i bought wincleaner,cost £2o but gets rid of all unwanted programmes and also cleans all un needed files,registry,internet files the lot,they sell it at pc world,very good

go here http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/download.php and dl eraser its free run it then right click any thing file/folder and erase even your recycle bin mess around with it and find out how to work it but your better testing it first on crap files
