unlike a conventional fossil fuel only car it will run for 2-3 miles on battery alone if you keep the speed below about 27mph.

A plug in hybrid would be better.

Depending on how the Toyota engineers designed it
A) It might keep running for only a bit longer but with much less power. However it is undesirable to do this as it is unsafe since it severely decreases your car's pull/acceleration when needed and puts more stress on the battery. Plus, the battery is more like a buffer, it will not have much staying power and will last only a few miles.
B) It might shut off immediately if the gas is over since it is a safety concern if you keep driving it. When you need the pulling power in the highway, and you don't have it, you might get rear ended by another vehicle.

I don't know if it stops altogether but Toyota says NOT to do this. The battery is not intended for all driving situations and therefore it will be hard on the battery and fuel pump.

By the way, a plug-in hybrid would totally defeat the purpose of a hybrid. If they plugged in, their energy would come from a power plant, that is polluting the air to produce that energy. One car wouldn't make any difference, but if everyone plugged in their cars, power plants would have to double their production. Hybrids charge their batteries from potential energy while coasting or braking.

Everything I've read says Don't let this happen! Bad for the car.
That said, I have gone 25 miles with the last gas block blinking. Still only took 10 gals to fill.
